A quiet spot amid the Frisian meadows — a peaceful stay at Logies Op Skyldum, with the Wadden Sea, the eleven cities and the finest cycling routes close at hand.
Skyldum (also written Schildum or Schelum) is a small hamlet in the municipality of Waadhoeke, in the open clay landscape of north-west Friesland. Within our own belt of trees stand just our house and Logies Op Skyldum, surrounded by wide meadows — exactly the calm that many guests come for.
From Skyldum the historic towns of Franeker and Harlingen are just minutes away, the wide polder is yours by bike, and the ferry to the Wadden islands is a quarter of an hour's drive. This is where our Logies Op Skyldum stands.

Skyldum lies near Winsum (Friesland) in the municipality of Waadhoeke, a stone's throw from Franeker and about a fifteen-minute drive from Harlingen on the Wadden Sea. It is a hamlet with no through traffic: the lane ends here, so it is quiet.
Wide, open and peaceful — yet half of Friesland is within half an hour.
A quiet stay in the heart of the Frisian countryside.
Op Skyldum is our lodging: a peaceful base to explore the area, or simply do nothing at all. The photos give a first impression of the house, the garden with jacuzzi and the wide views.

The Eleven Cities cycle route is a loop of about 256 km past all eleven Frisian cities.
Junctions Harlingen → Franeker: 51 – 54 – 18 – 17 – 16 – 15 – 09

More info ↗Skyldum stands on a terp: a man-made dwelling mound dating back to the Middle Iron Age (around 500–250 BC). On such mounds people lived dry and safe above the water, long before there were dykes. Mound research in the 1970s uncovered medieval finds here, including Siegburg pottery.
Over the centuries the hamlet's name changed with the times and the language — from Schyldum, via Schildum and the long-used Schelum, to today's Frisian Skyldum. Today it is a quiet hamlet of a handful of farms on the old mound.
Name history: Schyldum (1453) → Schildum (1511) → Schelum (1718) → Skyldum (today).
